7754
was built in 1930 by the North British Locomotive Company for the Great
Western Railway. Allocated from new to Reading and moving to Old Oak
Common in 1936 as station pilot for Paddington Station. Finally
allocated to Wellington (Shropshire) in May 1949. 7754 was withdrawn in
January 1959 and sold to the National Coal Board in July that year. It
worked first at Talywain Colliery in South Wales, sharing the shed with
another four tank engines. In 1970, 7754 was transferred to a new
colliery at Mountain Ash, It was not popular with the crews there,
fitted with a main line firebox and it also played havoc with the
lightly laid track. In 1975 a cylinder cover blew off and it was donated
to the Museum of Wales and located on the Llangollen railway where it
can be seen today in preservation.
